![]() Later that year, the family embarked on a world tour that included visits to the British Raj and the United States. After finishing her education at Roedean School, Edith spent six months in Paris in 1901. Edith and her family travelled extensively abroad, visiting Egypt, Greece, and Austria-Hungary. In 1884 the family moved to Manchester, where her father founded the engineering firm of R. Robert Dempster's father, also Robert Dempster, had founded Robert Dempster and Sons in 1855 for this purpose. The Dempsters were wealthy industrialists who amassed their fortune from the manufacture of equipment related to the gas industry. So, what theoretically happened to Rory Lomax after the events depicted in The Dig? The beauty of the Netflix film is that it allows for different interpretations, certainly for those who aren't familiar with the real-life historical context.Edith May Pretty (née Dempster 1 August 1883 – 17 December 1942) was an English landowner on whose land the Sutton Hoo ship burial was discovered after she hired Basil Brown, a local excavator and amateur archeologist, to find out if anything lay beneath the mounds on her property.Įdith Pretty was born in Elland, Yorkshire, to Elizabeth (née Brunton, died 1919) and Robert Dempster (born 1853). Peggy ultimately had a six-decade archaeological career and passed away in 1994 at age 82, while Stuart published over 20 books and received the Order of the British Empire honor in 1972, a full 24 years before his 1996 death at age 86. In real life, the Piggotts separated in 1954, two years before they officially divorced. The Dig's fictional romance boosts the suspense, but it's also a missed opportunity to give credit to the real photographers who documented the Sutton Hoo excavation, Mercie Lack and Barbara Wagstaff. In real life, however, there was no Rory, and the Piggotts were indeed married for two decades. By the end, Stuart suggests that he could "learn" to be happy with Peggy, a seemingly pathetic attempt to save his marriage. In reality, the Piggotts remained married until 1965, however, the 2021 Netflix movie suggests that their marriage was doomed just as it began. Stuart is portrayed as a man who may not be physically attracted to his wife, and may not be physically attracted to women at all. With the fictional Rory-Peggy subplot, The Dig strays from the truth while throwing shade at Chaplin's character, Stuart. ![]() ![]() Some Netflix audiences may believe that Flynn's character will return home safely, yet the subtext implies that Rory and Peggy will be forever separated in a physical sense (yet still connected in spirit). In The Dig, there's a spiritual aspect in the main plot involving Edith and Basil Brown (Ralph Fiennes), and so the fictional romance between Rory and Peggy amplifies the primary themes. Meanwhile, Peggy naturally wants Rory to stay because he provides the passion that's lacking her in marriage. But even though Flynn's character may seem destined to raise Robert while pursuing a romance with Peggy, his legacy, as so many men in real life, involves defending his country during World War II. ![]() More specifically, Edith is worried she may die soon and thus doesn't want Rory to get killed in battle. For example, Edith (a widow with health issues) pleads with Rory not to leave because she wants him to look after her young son, Robert (Archie Barnes). Edith's photographer cousin exists to fuel a secondary storyline about England's impending entrance into World War II and to further reinforce the themes of fate and legacy. The Dig's Peggy is based on a real person who participated in the Sutton Hoo project, however, Rory is a fictional character. Related: The Dig Cast, Character & Real-Life Comparison Guide The romance escalates between Flynn and James' youthful characters in the final act of the 2021 Netflix movie, however Rory must leave for World War II after being called by the Royal Air Force. Where Stuart and Peggy have a cold and dispassionate marriage, Rory connects with Peggy through his photography. Even though Peggy is married to a fellow excavator named Stuart (Ben Chaplin), she's drawn to Rory because he seems to truly understand and appreciate her. In The Dig, Rory and Peggy meet while working together on the Sutton Hoo excavation project, with the former being the cousin of protagonist Edith Pretty (Carey Mulligan) and the latter being a professional archaeologist.
